In keeping with passive house standards, Harmony Commons is well-ventilated and has better air flow than conventional buildings 鈥&nbsp;with the improved air quality intended to help with sleeping and studying.&nbsp;</p> <p>One of the building鈥檚 key innovations is that heat captured from various systems, including exhaust air from kitchens and showers, is used to heat spaces throughout the structure.&nbsp;</p> <p>In fact, the building is so efficient that the energy it uses to make more than 3,000 meals each day in its dorms and dining hall is less than that used by two average households.</p> <p>Designed by Handel Architects, Harmony Commons is also fully electric. There is also a new database of&nbsp;<a href="https://sustainability.utoronto.ca/ceccs-subcommittees/operations/campus-as-a-living-lab/">Campus as a Living Lab&nbsp;projects</a> and an&nbsp;<a href="https://sustainability.utoronto.ca/resources/inventories/sustainability-course-inventory/">inventory of courses</a>&nbsp;that provide students, partners and staff with the opportunity to experiment and contribute to real-world pressing sustainability and climate solutions. Work has been done <a href="/news/earth-day-see-how-u-t-s-campuses-are-building-sustainability-their-operations">across the three campuses</a> in fitting buildings with geothermal heating and cooling systems aimed at achieving low carbon emissions. &nbsp;</p> <p>The ongoing work done by <a href="https://reachalliance.org/who-are-we/">the Reach Alliance</a>, a tri-campus initiative founded at U of T鈥檚 Munk School of Global Affairs &amp; Public Policy, has also been committed to advancing SDGs by focusing on interventions and innovations that reach those living in extreme poverty. These efforts and others contributed to <a href="/news/u-t-ranked-2nd-world-first-ever-qs-sustainability-ranking">福利姬自慰being ranked second in the world in the inaugural QS Sustainability Rankings</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Erica Di Ruggiero</strong>, associate professor of global health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and research director of the SDGs@UofT, says there is a sense of urgency behind this work.</p> <p>鈥淭he target for the sustainable development goals is 2030, so there isn鈥檛 a lot of time. In fact, during the pandemic, many countries lost ground on the SDGs,鈥 says Di Ruggiero, whose research focuses on the influences affecting equitable policy progress on the sustainable development goals.&nbsp;</p> <p>鈥淏ut, along with our collaborators, we will harness the strengths of 福利姬自慰across disciplines and sectors to generate just and equitable solutions that will also inform future goals.鈥&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">On</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-add-new-story-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Add new story tags</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/tags/sdgsuoft" hreflang="en">SDGs@UofT</a></div> </div> </div> Thu, 27 Jul 2023 13:24:30 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 301886 at 鈥楢reas of mutual interest鈥: 福利姬自慰looks at ways to further deepen its ties with African universities and partners /news/areas-mutual-interest-u-t-looks-ways-further-deepen-its-ties-african-universities-and-partners <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">鈥楢reas of mutual interest鈥: 福利姬自慰looks at ways to further deepen its ties with African universities and partners</span> <div class="field field--name-field-featured-picture field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="eager" srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2023-05/BANNERIMG_1586-crop.jpg?h=3092d4c8&amp;itok=58VdXxTH 370w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_740/public/2023-05/BANNERIMG_1586-crop.jpg?h=3092d4c8&amp;itok=GUkSBv9l 740w, /sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_1110/public/2023-05/BANNERIMG_1586-crop.jpg?h=3092d4c8&amp;itok=KZ2aYE_W 1110w" sizes="(min-width:1200px) 1110px, (max-width: 1199px) 80vw, (max-width: 767px) 90vw, (max-width: 575px) 95vw" width="740" height="494" src="/sites/default/files/styles/news_banner_370/public/2023-05/BANNERIMG_1586-crop.jpg?h=3092d4c8&amp;itok=58VdXxTH" alt="&quot;&quot;"> </div> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>Christopher.Sorensen</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2023-05-30T10:29:01-04:00" title="Tuesday, May 30, 2023 - 10:29" class="datetime">Tue, 05/30/2023 - 10:29</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-cutline-long field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Cutline</div> <div class="field__item"><p><em>A nine-member delegation from 福利姬自慰recently visited higher education institutions in South Africa, Botswana and Ghana. The trip offered a chance to follow up on many of those topics with concrete actions, while also exploring new areas for further collaboration.</p> <p>鈥淥ur primary goal was to strengthen and expand our existing relationships, but also cultivate new ones in areas of mutual interest,鈥 Tettey says.</p> <p>鈥淲e鈥檙e approaching our relationship with African universities through a lens of true partnership&nbsp;鈥 one driven by co-creation and co-learning.
