Her passions also lie in animal rights and environmental issues.

She started a club that worked with the food service provider in her school鈥檚 cafeteria to develop and promote 鈥淢eatless Monday鈥 specials and increase the number of plant-based food options.

鈥淓ventually, that spread to a school district-wide level as well,鈥 said Xu. 鈥淲e connected with kids at other schools, where the same food service provider 鈥 Amaga Food 鈥 was incredibly supportive of the initiative and began serving specials at all the schools.

鈥淲e saw the sales increase as kids began to make more conscious food choices, whether it was for health, environmental, ethical or personal reasons.鈥

Xu鈥檚 activism was also trained on animal dissections. After she found out some students had a difficult time opting out of the animal dissection assignment in biology classes, Xu got over 250 of her peers to sign a petition calling for an opt-out policy on dissections and brought the demand forward to her school board, which resulted in her school district implementing a student-choice policy.

At U of T, Xu is in the engineering science program and has already gotten involved in the 福利姬自慰Aerospace Team and the Chestnut Residence Council social commission.

Abnash Bassi, Delta, B.C.

Passionate about renewable energy and environmental issues, Bassi was drawn to 福利姬自慰by the sense of community and the multidisciplinary nature of the engineering science program.

鈥淚 found it particularly interesting that, even in such a large community where there鈥檚 three different campuses and each campus is pretty large, there鈥檚 an ability to foster a sense of community across so many students,鈥 Bassi said.

As a high school student, Bassi was a climate action fellow with Be the Change Earth Alliance, a Vancouver-based charitable organization, and was co-president of her high school鈥檚 sustainability club.

She led environmental workshops for neighbouring elementary schools and helped spearhead sustainability campaigns with other high schools.

鈥淔or me, growing up, my family always placed an emphasis on the interactions that I have with my surrounding environment,鈥 she said.

Bassi was also a member of Delta, B.C. Member of Parliament Carla Qualtrough鈥檚 constituency youth council, participated in robotics competitions and coached basketball for elementary school students.

In her first year at U of T, Bassi has gotten involved with Engineers Without Borders, the 福利姬自慰Aerospace Team and marched with fellow 福利姬自慰students during the climate strike in September.

News home page banner

Off

Fri, 25 Oct 2019 04:00:00 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 159841 at For aspiring 福利姬自慰physicist, meeting with Nobel Prize winners a rare chance to learn from world's brightest /news/aspiring-u-t-physicist-meeting-nobel-prize-winners-rare-chance-learn-world-s-brightest For aspiring 福利姬自慰physicist, meeting with Nobel Prize winners a rare chance to learn from world's brightest

noreen.rasbach Wed, 10/09/2019 - 17:06

Cutline

Patrick Pallagi, a second-year student studying physics, recently travelled to Germany for the annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, where about 40 Nobel Prize winners gathered to meet the next generation of scientists (photo by Nick Iwanyshyn)

Tom Yun

Topic

Our Community

Faculty of Arts & Science

Nobel Prize

Physics

Research & Innovation

St. Michael's College

Undergraduate Students

Patrick Pallagi, a second-year student studying physics at the University of Toronto, has come closer than most to the prestigious Nobel Prize.

The student at St. Michael鈥檚 College recently travelled to Lindau, Germany to participate in the 69th annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, where about 40 Nobel Prize winners gathered to meet the next generation of scientists between June 30 and July 5.

He was one of just 580 young scientists invited to attend the event.

鈥淚 waited around six months to see what was going to happen, and then I received an email that I was accepted,鈥 said Pallagi, who is originally from Hungary and came to 福利姬自慰through the Pearson Scholarship.

He added that he was encouraged to apply to attend the conference by his mentor in Budapest.

The Nobel Prize committee is busy handing out the 2019 awards this week. On Wednesday, it announced Canadian-born physicist James Peebles was one of three researchers who won the Nobel Prize in Physics 鈥渇or theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology.鈥 Today, the committee gave the prize in chemistry to a trio of researchers for the development of lithium-ion batteries.

As for last summer鈥檚 Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, Pallagi said he had a chance to learn from renowned physicists such as Steven Chu, who was energy secretary under the Obama administration and won the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Pallagi, who is pursing a double major in physics and the history and philosophy of science, told 福利姬自慰News he was intrigued at how Chu was an early supporter of Tesla and the electric car industry. He said he also learned about the value of looking at science from a public policy angle.

鈥淲e had a great conversation with him about science policy,鈥 Pallagi said.

Pallagi also had the opportunity to talk to Canadian Nobel winners such as astrophysicist Arthur McDonald, who was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics, and laser physicist Donna Strickland, who won the same award last year.

鈥(Strickland) made a great presentation about how her thesis statement was a great new idea at the time, and how her first paper became a ground-breaking revolution in laser physics that she didn鈥檛 anticipate at all,鈥 said Pallagi.

At U of T, several faculty and alumni have received the Nobel Prize over the years.
