Immediately after graduating, she was the first design hire at Wattpad, founded by fellow 福利姬自慰Engineering alumnus Allen Lau, where she was instrumental in developing the design team. She then joined Wave Financial as product designer for accounting products, bringing valuable design perspective in the early stages of building its award-winnng financial services and software product and laying the groundwork for many future versions. Idrees was also chief product officer at Wealthsimple, where she helped grow the fintech firm to 50 employees.

In 2016, she took on her biggest challenge yet as founder and CEO of Dot Health. Dot Health uses bank-level security to encrypt, store and transfer a patient鈥檚 medical information. Users can then search their health history and share their health information with care providers.

Idrees is also a passionate advocate for diversity in the tech industry. She has spoken extensively in the media and at conferences and symposiums about the challenges she faces as a Muslim female entrepreneur, and has called on the tech industry to take responsibility for its lack of diversity and gender equity.

She also leads by example. At Dot Health, 50 per cent of the board of directors and 100 per cent of the leadership team are women. Steacie Memorial Fund, a private foundation dedicated to the advancement of Canadian science and engineering.

As the Canada Research Chair in Functional Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering, Radisic of the Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering has made transformational advances in tissue engineering resulting in new methods for growing human tissue in the lab. Radisic was the first in the world to use electrical impulses and specially designed bioreactors to guide isolated heart cells to assemble into a beating structure. These beating heart tissues are already being used to test potential drugs for side-effects.

Radisic and her team recently developed an injectable tissue patch that could help repair hearts, livers or other organs damaged by disease or injury, potentially eliminating the need for invasive transplant surgeries. They have also created the AngioChip, a 3D, fully vascularized piece of heart tissue that beats in real time. Radisic鈥檚 technologies are the foundation for the startup TARA Biosystems, which is now working with several major pharmaceutical companies on drug discovery and validation using the matured human heart tissues developed in her lab.

Read more about Milica Radisic's research

鈥淚 am truly honoured and humbled to receive this prize in memory of E.W.R. Selected by a panel of expert judges and the editorial staff of Technology Review, the TR35 recognizes young researchers who are tackling important problems in transformative ways and opening up new possibilities in technology.

Previous members of the TR35 include the founders of Google, Facebook and Linux. This year鈥檚 group includes Drew Houston, maker of Dropbox, Daniel Ek, inventor of Spotify, and Ben Silbermann, creator of Pinterest.

鈥淚 am honoured by the recognition which is as much for the excellent students in my research group as it is for me,鈥 says Poon, 32. 鈥淭he MIT TR35 is just a first step as we strive to be the best in the world at what we do. We have a lot of research ahead of us."

Using optics or light signals, Poon - along with PhD student Wesley Sacher - demonstrated a faster, more energy-efficient way to transmit data than the traditional method which relies on electronic signals.

While many researchers seek a way to replace today鈥檚 electronic signals with light signals, only Poon鈥檚 team has figured out a way to make that light-based data transmission affordable over short distances. The breakthrough is thanks to the unique design of their device, known as an optical modulator.

Poon鈥檚 design, which sends laser light looping around tiny rings attached to a computer chip, is the first optical modulator to be both fast and energy-efficient.

Technology Review, which describes Poon鈥檚 creation as a 鈥渢iny roller coaster of light鈥, predicts it could be the breakthrough that keeps data centers cool.

鈥淭he jump to optical data transmission in servers can鈥檛 come soon enough,鈥 says Technology Review reporter Neil Savage. 鈥淒ata centers consumed at least 200 billion kilowatt-hours鈥 worth of power in 2010, and the proliferation of smartphones and cloud storage is only going to push that higher, driving up costs and the risk of heat-related outages.鈥

In an interview with The Globe and Mail, Poon, who completed her undergraduate studies at U of T, spoke about returning to her alma mater after receiving her PhD at California Institute of Technology.

鈥淚t was people 鈥 the student quality, that鈥檚 what really motivated me to come back. To do research, it has to be a whole team. We rely heavily on graduate-student researchers, and undergraduates become graduate students. It is really the No. 1 key to success.鈥

Poon is profiled in the September/October issue of Technology Review. She will also be honoured at the EmTech MIT conference, taking place October 24-26 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

鈥淛oyce Poon鈥檚 achievements would be remarkable for any researcher, but for someone in the first few years of her career they are absolutely extraordinary,鈥 says Cristina Amon, Dean, Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. 鈥淟ike many of our young faculty members, she is already on her way to becoming a pioneer in her field.
