And can we figure it out based on the evidence that we collect?鈥 says <strong>Craig Steeves</strong>, a UTIAS professor and the course鈥檚 co-ordinator.</p> <p>There were 240 aviation accidents worldwide involving Canadian-registered aircraft in 2017, according to the&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bst-tsb.gc.ca/eng/stats/aviation/2017/ssea-ssao-2017.asp">Transportation Safety Board鈥檚 (TSB) annual statistics</a>. That鈥檚 10 more than the previous year. It's hoped that teaching the methods, processes and technologies involved in an air accident investigation in Canada will help improve safety.</p> <p><img alt class="media-image attr__typeof__foaf:Image img__fid__10139 img__view_mode__media_large attr__format__media_large" src="/sites/default/files/plane-dome-%28embed%29.jpg" style="width: 323px; height: 453px; margin: 10px; float: left;" typeof="foaf:Image">Steeves initially developed the course concept more than three years ago, but AER 1604 didn鈥檛 come to fruition until he met Ewan Tasker, an experienced pilot, air traffic controller and federal aircraft accident investigator.</p> <p>鈥淚 think it will be great to finally have this type of training available in Canada,鈥 says Tasker, who is now teaching the course.</p> <p>鈥淚 think the lessons learned, specifically understanding underlying factors, apply not only to investigating plane crashes but translate well into many other disciplines.鈥</p> <p>The plane wreckage (left) was donated to the institute last year as an educational tool.</p> <p>鈥淪eeing, in person, what is likely to appear at a crash site is much more valuable to our students than just examining photographs,鈥 says Steeves. 鈥淛ust getting the sense of the physical weight of pieces of the wreckage that have broken off, the size and the bulk 鈥 this information is all so important.鈥</p> <p>By the end of the course, students will write an air accident investigation report based on information given in class, as well as the information they collected at the crash site. The simulated wreck will remain in place until Feb. 12.</p> <p>The course also addresses an educational need for the TSB. 鈥淲hen the TSB hires people, they often have to send them to take courses in the U.S. 鈥 that means Canadian students end up learning a lot of American regulations,鈥 explains Steeves. 鈥淭hen when they come back here, they have to be retrained on Canadian regulations.鈥</p> <p>Steeves plans to stage a different crash scenario each year. Future versions will be informed by the students鈥 experience with the first simulation.</p> <p>鈥淲e鈥檙e a month into our first time teaching it, and I鈥檓 so pleased that it鈥檚 finally happened after three years,鈥 he says.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-home-page-banner field--type-boolean field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">News home page banner</div> <div class="field__item">Off</div> </div> Thu, 07 Feb 2019 16:49:12 +0000 Christopher.Sorensen 152918 at Aerospace Studies, Institute for /node/8381 <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Aerospace Studies, Institute for</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>sgupta</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2016-01-07T15:47:09-05:00" title="Thursday, January 7, 2016 - 15:47" class="datetime">Thu, 01/07/2016 - 15:47</time> </span> <div class="field field--name-field-url field--type-string field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">URL</div> <div class="field__item">https://www.utias.utoronto.ca/</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-tags field--type-entity-reference field--label-above clearfix"> <h3 class="field__label">Tags</h3> <ul class="links field__items"> <li><a href="/news/tags/utias" hreflang="en">UTIAS</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/aviation" hreflang="en">Aviation</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/engineering" hreflang="en">Engineering</a></li> <li><a href="/news/tags/downsview" hreflang="en">downsview</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-campus field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Campus</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/6953" hreflang="en">St. George</a></div> </div> Thu, 07 Jan 2016 20:47:09 +0000 sgupta 8381 at
