#UofTBTS16: Student tools you don't want to miss

Whether you're new to campus, or a pro, you may not be aware of all the things ¸£Àû¼§×Ôοhas to offer. To help new and returning students, we’ve provided essential tips to help you get the most out of your university experience.

Commuter’s cheat sheet

First thing’s first, getting to campus. How will you commute?

  • TTC: get a discounted Metropass from the , , . UTM students can pick up a U-Pass student transit pass to access MiWay, Mississauga’s transit system. And in 2016, UTM partnered with Brampton Transit to provide to campus.
  • Bike: if cycling is your thing, you can find bike racks all around campus. Don’t own a bike? No problem. There are plenty of on and near the St. George campus so you can cycle in. Or, rent a bicycle for 48 hours from UTM’s for free.
  • Car sharing: if you drive to campus, using a car share is a great option. There are plenty of locations at , and .
  • Carpooling: theis a member of the Scarborough program. Not only will you have a new travel buddy, you’ll also be helping the environment.
  • UTM Shuttle Bus: students registered for the current academic session at UTM have unlimited fare-free access to services. These shuttles connect UTM with the St. George campus and with the Sheridan College Oakville campus.

Whether you take plane, train or automobile (ok, maybe not the plane part… ), you need to know where you’re going! Luckily, ¸£Àû¼§×Ôοoffers to help plan your route and find classes. And yes, there is an app for that (Android and iOS).

Media corner

If you’re on campus with time to spare, why not take a few minutes to find out what’s going on in university news or listen to your favourite jams?

  • : pick up a copy of the University of Toronto’s award-winning student newspaper. It’s been around since 1880 and is one of the oldest student newspapers in Canada.
  • : at UTM, pick up the student-run newspaper that has been around since 1969.
  • : read this UTSC student-led magazine that can be found on dedicated stands throughout campus buildings and online.
  • : tune in to U of T’s student radio station. On air 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you’re always grooving.
  • : listen to UTM’s student-run, student-hosted campus radio station broadcasting Canadian and independent music since 1970.
  • : stream online music and shows, and while you’re at it, check out the range of services they offer for UTSC students and affiliated clubs and organizations.

Food frenzy

There’s nothing worse than sitting in class with a rumbling tummy. Fear not, there are a wide range of affordable, sustainable and nutritious food options available on campus. You can even check out weekly location , grab fresh food from the every Wednesday, or see where to at UTM! If you purchase a campus meal plan, you receive discounts at select dining halls and eateries on campus, as well as deals at the ¸£Àû¼§×ÔοBookstore. Meal plans are available at the , and . And don’t forget you can load funds onto your to use at participating food locations.

Quench your thirst

Thirsty after dining at a delicious campus eatery? Wash it down with some H2O - there are plenty of fountains on campus, all conveniently outlined on a. But be sure to bring your own bottle. ¸£Àû¼§×Ôοis bottled water free!

Need something a little stronger? There are many coffee joints on campus, including (located in University College’s Junior Common Room), Beachgrove Cafe (UTSC Science Wing), and (located in UTM’s Deerfield Hall), where you can sip certified fair trade teas or coffee.

Books Galore

Need a textbook for next week’s quiz? Head on over to your for new and used textbooks or book rentals. And while you’re there, check out ¸£Àû¼§×Ôοsweatshirts, school supplies and more.

Require a source for an essay you’re working on? Check out the on campus. Incoming Arts & Sciences, Applied Science & Engineering and OISE graduate students can benefit from , where they are paired with a University of Toronto librarian during their first year. andstudents can contact a Liaison Librarian to learn more about what the library can do for them.

Kick it into high gear

It’s all about balance – take a break from your studies and get moving!

Treat your eyes to a visual delight and experience art on campus. You can visit the for free, including the Art Museum at the University of Toronto, Doris McCarthy Gallery and the Blackwood Gallery, just to name a few.
